"Why Is Another Way Out Important?"

Sixty-two percent of African American children are raised by single parents, the majority of which are female.

Seventy-two percent of African American males drop out before completing high school.

Approximately 610,000 African American males between the ages of 20 and 29 years are in prison, on probation, or on parole.

Only 437,000 African American males are enrolled in college.

Homicide is the most frequent cause of death for African American males between the ages of 15 and 34.

Another Way Out will empower its participants with strategies and provide the encouragement and support to lessen the influence of grim circumstances on their individual lives. Empowerment, self-reliance and responsibility are essential tools to use in countering the hopelessness, powerlessness, and self-destructive behavior that are far too evident among many of our youth.

Empowerment is a process based on the belief that individuals and communities are their own best resources for effecting change in their experience. Another Way Out will match adult mentors with youth between the ages 8 and 18 to experience the process of establishing goals, assembling the necessary resources, and demonstrating perseverance to accomplish these goals. The young ladies and men will experience success while being guided and nurtured by caring adults.

For many African American youth, "success" is typified by "larger than life" figures such as athletes and entertainers. Realizing that not everyone will reach the accomplishments of Michael Jordan or Michael Jackson, Another Way Out will place success within reach of its participants. Young ladies and men will see it in their own lives and be surrounded by men and women who exemplify successful living on attainable levels.

There is an often-quoted African proverb that says, "It Takes A Whole Village To Raise A Child". Another Way Out is one group within our village coming forth to do its part.
